Hunyuan, an ancient city sculpted by the passage of time, is framed by Mount Heng and nourished by the Hun River. Every brick and stone carries the echoes of history, while each alleyway whispers tales of days gone by.
This autumn, faculty and students from the Film and Animation Department of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, armed with brushes and a deep passion for art, ventured into the ancient city of Hunyuan, embarking on a week-long artistic journey to reconnect with the roots of their craft. They organized the "Yuan Ying Hunyuan" exhibition, centered around the core concept of "Empowering Ancient Cities Through Art." Drawing inspiration from the city's timeless charm, they captured its breathtaking landscapes through their paintings, infused the ancient town with fresh creativity, and meticulously documented the profound cultural heritage embedded in this cherished land.
During this field trip and creative workshop, teachers and students not only captured the natural beauty of the ancient city but also focused on Yong'an Temple’s Yuan Dynasty Water and Land Murals Drawing inspiration from the Jin Dynasty's densely-tiered brick pagoda at Yuangjue Temple, over 300 works were created to highlight the unique regional characteristics of Hunyuan. Through innovative approaches such as reimagining anime characters, crafting animated emoji packs, and developing comic series, these creations breathe new life into this ancient city with a thousand-year history, seamlessly weaving together past and present across "frames," while fostering a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Yong'an Temple, officially known as Yong'an Chan Temple, was first built during the Jin Dynasty and is now a nationally designated key cultural relic protection site. The main hall The Authentic Dharma Transmission Hall , it features a single-eave hip roof, with the main hall spanning five bays in width and three bays in depth, presenting a rectangular floor plan that sits atop a towering platform. The hall’s true masterpiece lies in its exquisitely painted water-and-land Dharma Assembly murals, which are richly colored and meticulously detailed. Covering an area of over 180 square meters, these vibrant artworks depict a total of 882 distinct figures arranged into 135 unique groups. The subjects range from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to celestial officials, star deities, imperial gods, and even iconic figures embodying Confucian virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, integrity, and righteousness—each rendered with lifelike realism, dazzling hues, and intricate craftsmanship, making them a true treasure of Chinese art.
