It is the majestic spirit of Hengshan Mountain that inspires eminent scholars, and it is the thousand-year-old ancient temple that captures the hearts of people across the country. Sabeining’s family first visited the Hanging Temple, renowned as “the greatest spectacle under heaven.” Built in the late Northern Wei Dynasty and weathered over 1,500 years of wind and rain, this ancient temple is like a dazzling cultural gem set amidst the steep cliffs of Cuiping Peak on the western side of Jinlong Gorge in Hengshan Mountain. It is celebrated worldwide for its three unique features—uniqueness, suspension, and ingenuity—and is the only surviving temple in China that integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

Walking along the narrow, single-person plank walkway of the Hanging Temple, with a deep, secluded canyon stretching out below and soaring pavilions and halls suspended in mid-air all around, one can see 27 slender wooden beams firmly embedded in the cliff face, supporting the temple’s majestic grandeur. The breathtaking craftsmanship leaves Sabine Sa and her family continually awestruck. From the two characters “Magnificent,” inscribed in Li Bai’s own hand on the cliff wall, to the millennia-old statues and murals inside the halls, every detail tells the story of the exquisite artistry and profound cultural heritage of this ancient Northern Mountain sanctuary. The family pauses to admire each scene, listening intently to the temple’s storied past, while immersing themselves in the wisdom and meticulous artistry of the ancients amidst the sheer, precipitous beauty—savoring every moment of this delightful parent–child outing.

Their rigorous composition and lifelike details fully showcase the superb level of Yuan-dynasty painting, embodying the spiritual beliefs and aesthetic pursuits of our ancestors. Sa Beining and his family slowed their pace to quietly admire these artistic masterpieces that remain remarkably vibrant after centuries, savoring the profound depth of traditional Chinese culture and enjoying a leisurely Qingming moment steeped in rustic Zen serenity. After the visit, he happily inscribed the words “Feel, Marvel, Thank,” using concise language to express his admiration for the marvel of ancient architecture and his respect for the wisdom of our forebears, thereby highlighting the enduring appeal of Hengshan Mountain’s cultural charm, which continues to draw celebrities from all walks of life.
