It is the majestic spirit of Hengshan Mountain that inspires eminent scholars, and it is the thousand-year-old ancient temple that captures the hearts of people across the country. During the Qingming Festival mini-holiday, the spring breeze swept over Hengshan Mountain, where ancient buildings dating back a thousand years harmonized beautifully with the spring scenery, driving up the popularity of cultural and tourism activities. Sa Beining, a well-loved CCTV host, visited Hunyuan in Shanxi Province with his family and explored two major cultural landmarks in the Hengshan Scenic Area—Xuankong Temple and Yong’an Temple—immersing himself in the millennial historical and cultural heritage of Hengshan Mountain and adding a touch of human warmth to this spring cultural and tourism journey.
Sabeining’s family first visited the Hanging Temple, renowned as “the greatest spectacle under heaven.” Built in the late Northern Wei Dynasty and weathered over 1,500 years of wind and rain, this ancient temple is like a dazzling cultural gem set amidst the steep cliffs of Cuiping Peak on the western side of Jinlong Gorge in Hengshan Mountain. It is celebrated worldwide for its three unique features—uniqueness, suspension, and ingenuity—and is the only surviving temple in China that integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
Walking along the narrow, single-person plank walkway of the Hanging Temple, with a deep, secluded canyon stretching out below and soaring pavilions and halls suspended in mid-air all around, one can see 27 slender wooden beams firmly embedded in the cliff face, supporting the temple’s majestic grandeur. The breathtaking craftsmanship leaves Sabine Sa and her family continually awestruck. From the two characters “Magnificent,” inscribed in Li Bai’s own hand on the cliff wall, to the millennia-old statues and murals inside the halls, every detail tells the story of the exquisite artistry and profound cultural heritage of this ancient Northern Mountain sanctuary. The family pauses to admire each scene, listening intently to the temple’s storied past, while immersing themselves in the wisdom and meticulous artistry of the ancients amidst the sheer, precipitous beauty—savoring every moment of this delightful parent–child outing.
Many tourists and fans who happened to run into the family couldn’t hide their delight upon seeing Sa Beining and his loved ones, all expressing how fortunate they were to encounter their idol at such a cultural landmark. Everyone was also touched by the family’s low-key, warm way of spending time together—no ostentation, just enjoying the holiday and soaking in the culture like any ordinary visitors, fully showcasing the down-to-earth charm and approachability of a celebrity family.

After bidding farewell to the magnificence and precipitousness of the Hanging Temple, Sa Beining and his family headed to the adjacent Yong’an Temple for a serene artistic journey. As a key cultural heritage site in the Hengshan Mountain scenic area, Yong’an Temple is renowned worldwide for its exquisite Yuan Dynasty murals and is an indispensable gem in the Northern Yue cultural system.
The temple’s antique architecture exudes solemnity and reverence, with red walls and dark-tiled roofs imbued with the timeless charm of bygone eras, while the murals inside are truly masterpieces of art. Vibrant in color and characterized by fluid lines, these murals vividly depict Buddhist and Taoist figures as well as the myriad facets of folk life. Their rigorous composition and lifelike details fully showcase the superb level of Yuan-dynasty painting, embodying the spiritual beliefs and aesthetic pursuits of our ancestors. Sa Beining and his family slowed their pace to quietly admire these artistic masterpieces that remain remarkably vibrant after centuries, savoring the profound depth of traditional Chinese culture and enjoying a leisurely Qingming moment steeped in rustic Zen serenity. After the visit, he happily inscribed the words “Feel, Marvel, Thank,” using concise language to express his admiration for the marvel of ancient architecture and his respect for the wisdom of our forebears, thereby highlighting the enduring appeal of Hengshan Mountain’s cultural charm, which continues to draw celebrities from all walks of life. For Sa Beining and his family, their trip to Hengshan was not only a pleasant family outing but also a close encounter with and a passing on of China’s outstanding traditional culture. In springtime, Hengshan is lush with greenery and its ancient buildings have been beautifully restored, offering both the healing beauty of natural landscapes and the enriching influence of a thousand years of cultural heritage. Whether it’s a family excursion, a parent–child educational tour, a cultural exploration, or a relaxing vacation, visitors can find a unique and delightful experience here.
