Hengshan Mountain Scenic Area is a mountainous area with high altitudes. The temperature on the mountain is about 2 degrees lower than in the ancient city below, and the temperature difference between day and night is large. Tourists should bring warm clothes to prevent cold.

Thousand Buddha Ridge

╱ Exploring the Mountain Journey ╱

The first route is the Exploring the Mountain Journey, including Hengshan Mountain—"Dragon Basin Valley, the Pearl of Tang River"—Dong Hulu Tou Resort ("Small European Forest Park")—"Little Huangshan of the North"—Thousand Buddha Ridge. Here, tourists can experience the beautiful scenery of Hengshan Mountain, enjoy the tranquility of a paradise, and seek the poetry and distance of the north.

Shenxi National Wetland Park

The second route is the Health and Wellness Journey, including Tangtou Hot Spring Resort—Hengzong Zen Institute—Shenxi National Wetland Park—Astragalus Culture Park. Here, tourists can savor tea, meditate, and find the true meaning of life.

The third route is the Cultural Journey, including Hunyuan Ancient City—Hunyuan Prefecture Office—Ma Family Courtyard. Here, tourists can experience the thousand-year-old county style of Hunyuan Ancient City at the foot of Hengshan Mountain and appreciate the magnificent ancient city.

The fourth route is the Research and Study Journey, including the ancient architectural complexes of Hengshan Mountain, the Hanging Temple, Yong'an Temple, Dayun Temple, Lǜ Lǚ Shéncí Temple, and Li Yù Měi's Tomb. The area has seven national-level protected sites, eight provincial-level protected sites, fourteen municipal and county-level protected sites, and 488 immovable cultural relics, covering the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, including sculptures, inscriptions, murals, and architecture, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the profound and inclusive Hengshan Mountain culture.

╱ Culinary Journey ╱

The fifth route is the Culinary Journey, where tourists can savor Shanxi's famous snacks, such as Hun Yuan jelly, warming water-boiled mutton, Hun Yuan smoked chicken with unique local characteristics, crispy fried hemp leaves, cold mixed oat noodles, Hengshan Mountain old Taoist tea, and Liyu peaches and apricots. In Hun Yuan, you can not only feast your eyes but also your stomach, enjoying authentic northern Shanxi flavors to satisfy your taste buds.

05 Tourist Reception Layout

To welcome the peak tourist flow during the May Day holiday and alleviate traffic pressure, in addition to the usual parking lots of Hengshan Mountain and the Hanging Temple, we have added new parking lots this year: Liuhe Parking Lot, Tourist Service Center Parking Lot, Xiapanpu Parking Lot, and Hunyuan Ancient City Temporary Parking Lot.

06 Cultural and Tourism Activities

This year's May Day holiday, from April 29th to May 3rd, will feature various cultural and tourism activities. Tourists can immerse themselves in the festivities. The Sanyuan Palace and Hengzong Parking Lot in the Hengshan Mountain Scenic Area add cultural interest to tourists' mountain travel, with traditional folk performances such as divine guidance, yangge (a folk dance), storytelling, stilt walking, donkey riding, and car light shows. The Yong'an Zen Temple in the Hengshan Mountain Scenic Area will also hold intangible cultural heritage performances such as yangge and fan drums.

Hun Yuan Confucian Temple There will be script-based tours (including three check-in points: the Prefecture Office, Yong'an Temple, and Drum Tower), cultural etiquette, Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) story experiences, tea ceremony performances, majestic drum performances, classical dances, classic recitations, national studies parent-child interactions, Hanfu performances, tourist calligraphy and painting interactions, and immersive experience plays.

Hun Yuan Prefecture Office We have prepared the "Opening Ceremony" live-action drama and the ancient city You Le Pi Le band performance at the east square of the Prefecture Office. You can also enjoy tea and calligraphy on the cruise ship at the west square of the Prefecture Office. There are also immersive experiences such as hall trials, costume experiences, archery experiences, handmade printing, photography exhibitions, and taking photos with Qilin (a mythical creature) as a Da Luo Jinxian (a high-ranking immortal), among other colorful interactive activities.

Hunyuan Ancient City Drum Tower Cultural Corridor There are musical instrument and dance performances. Tourists can ride retro vintage cars in the ancient city streets to experience the charm of Hunyuan and watch intangible cultural heritage performances. The traditional opera performance at Yide Street stage will let you feel the charm of Quyi art. Of course, you can't miss the parent-child interaction at the Astragalus cultural park! The Astragalus cultural park also prepares special performances for tourists, including the Astragalus fairy story drama, band performances, and Qi Bao robot dance show.

07 Traffic Control Information

To ensure smooth and safe road traffic in Hengshan Mountain and the Hanging Temple scenic area during the May Day holiday, from April 29, 2023 to May 3, 2023, traffic control will be implemented daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on the section of the original National Highway 239 Dongda Line from the south entrance to the roundabout. This control applies to all vehicles except for tourist buses and police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and engineering rescue vehicles on duty.
