To continuously safeguard the high-quality forest ecological resources of Hengshan Mountain and effectively prevent and curb Japanese pine wood borer The proliferation and spread of forest pests such as the pine caterpillar pose a serious threat to the healthy growth of trees in the Tianfengling Key Forest Area. Recently, … Hengshan Mountain Scenic Area Precisely seizing the critical window for pest and disease control, large-scale, coordinated prevention and management operations were carried out in the key forest areas of Tianfengling. This operation innovatively employs an integrated control approach—combining drone-based aerial spraying with manual assistance—tailored to the complex operational conditions of mountainous forest regions, thereby comprehensively strengthening the ecological safety barrier of the scenic area’s forests.
This integrated pest and disease control operation covers 3,200 mu of the Tianfengling key forest area. Given the terrain’s pronounced undulations, the scattered distribution of trees, and the high difficulty of manual operations—often resulting in untreated blind spots—the operation is equipped with two units. DJI T100 Professional unmanned plant protection drones conduct intelligent aerial spraying operations, leveraging an advanced route‑planning system to achieve precise, fixed‑point, and quantitative application, effectively covering both the upper and lower surfaces of tree leaves. This control campaign simultaneously carried out two rounds of full‑coverage aerial treatments, with repeated disinfection measures further enhancing efficacy and comprehensively reducing pest and disease pressure across the forested area. Initial pest population size , to prevent the resurgence and proliferation of pests and diseases.
To enhance the precision of pest and disease control, this operation is supported by a dedicated team of ground‑based assistants, establishing a three‑dimensional prevention and control system that combines “intelligent aerial spraying with meticulous ground‑level follow‑up.” Prior to aerial application, staff conduct a comprehensive survey of the entire forest area, remove obstacles within the operational zone, carefully formulate compliant spray solutions, and delineate operational boundaries and safety zones, thereby clearing all potential impediments to efficient and safe drone operations. During spraying, operators continuously monitor drone flight status, spray density, and flight paths, dynamically adjusting operational parameters to strictly regulate solution ratios, spray heights, and application rates. Following completion, a thorough post‑application inspection is carried out across the entire area, with targeted manual re‑spraying in localized missed spots or obscured regions, ensuring that no blind spots remain and achieving full coverage, zero dead angles, and complete eradication of any omissions.
This operation employed a 25% diflubenzuron suspension concentrate throughout for pest control. This formulation is a low‑toxicity, safe, and environmentally friendly biological insecticide, with stable performance and reliable efficacy. It is specifically designed to target the larvae of various leaf‑feeding pests in forested areas, offering potent mortality and growth‑inhibiting effects. Metamorphosis Moreover, the formulation leaves minimal residues and exhibits excellent ecological compatibility, posing no adverse effects on avian species, beneficial organisms, or the surrounding ecosystem within the forest area. Aerial spraying operations are meticulously scheduled to avoid peak hours, with fixed operating hours from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. each day—prior to the park’s opening—thereby effectively minimizing any potential impact of plant protection activities and chemical applications on visitors and the scenic environment, thus ensuring comprehensive safety for all guests.
This integrated, three-dimensional control approach—combining drone-based intelligent aerial spraying with meticulous manual follow-up—has efficiently addressed the challenges of pest and disease management in mountainous and forested areas, significantly elevating the level of intelligent and refined prevention and control of forestry pests within the Hengshan Mountain Scenic Area, and effectively curbing the risk of pest and disease spread at its source. Moving forward, the Hengshan Scenic Area Management Center will routinely conduct monitoring and patrols for forest pests and diseases, as well as early warning and preventive measures, continuously refining its green and technology-driven control systems, further enhancing the stability of the scenic area’s forest ecosystem and the quality of its natural landscapes, and steadfastly safeguarding the pristine ecological foundation of Hengshan’s lush mountains and clear waters.
